Started at 11 am and finished at 5 pm. Great day with big time views. I have never seen a trailhead so crowded with cars. summitted at 10 am 7/19 and had to go down pretty quickly because of a storm. The trail levels out for a moment and resumes climbing steeply on talus and rocks right up to the base of the summit block.

Recommend hiking in to that point (about 3.5 miles), camping and summiting next day. You can traverse over to Colombia but would make for a very long day, and looked pretty rocky. Wow, that’s a busy road this year – cars coming up until I finally drifted off after 10. Most of it is just walking a pretty obvious and easy trail, and towards the summit you have a little bit of scrambling. Started off with a plan to summit Mt Columbia but no signs posted anywhere (beware, even at the Trailhead) and I missed my turn at a fork in the trail about 4 miles in. Late season wasn’t too bad and we ran into a few who did the full loop and said it was fairly sketchy with snow on one side and very steep climb on the other. They are large creatures with sharp and dangerous looking horns that are quite capable of harming or even killing people. The last little bit near the parking lot was the worst. Trail is very well maintained and marked. Really fun class 3 scramble at the top. Weather was fantastic. The scramble for the last 30’ to summit adds the last bit of excitement of an overall great hike. After that it gets steeper and rockier but its still a clear trail and not especially difficult (yet).

Otherwise, great views (one of the more interesting Sawatch 14ers in my opinion) and a fun but tiring day. The hike up was beautiful and the valley bellow Mount Harvard was amazing! If your photo isn't featured, it will still be added to the full collection of photos for this peak. There is a slight section of class 3 in the final 20 feet or so from the top. That's an OK hike. Very long walk and gradual ascent until reaching the first scree field at about 12,500 feet, 5+ miles into hike. The last mile was a pretty brutal push.

Trail was not busy on a Monday. We summited this peak on August 6. As others have said, there’s no way I’d attempt the traverse to Columbia unless you’re summiting Harvard by 7-8A. We were already exhausted, but had to cross, then climb this ridiculously large talus field. Started at Cottonwood TH at 7:30 am. The Horn Fork Basin is a beautiful approach, the final pitch onto the summit makes an interesting finish, and the views make this trip a very worthwhile hike. The first intersection has a sign pointing to Brown’s Pass to the left and Bear Lake to the right. Six others joined me after I summited on this beautiful day. Great, well marked trail until a few spots above tree line. There are small snow fields that still exist but we were able to get through them without spikes. This was an epic! Full day hike. Whatever it is, its a nice little capstone on a fun, effortful hike to a great summit. The descent of Columbia was also slow. I clocked it at exactly 14 miles RT.

Enjoyed Harvard quite a bit more as a stand-alone hike. Mount Harvard is a Colorado 14er and also the fourth highest mountain in the contiguous United States. Named in 1869 by members of the first Harvard Mining School class while on expedition with professor Josiah Dwight Whitney, the namesake of Mount Whitney. Prominence is a popular metric for peaks for two reasons: 1) it’s objective and relatively easy to calculate, and 2) higher prominence peaks are more likely to be interesting with higher independence vs. peaks with lower prominence. The trail was not busy at all. I have heard horror stories from other people I have known that climbed this mountain and they said the goats on this mountain are particularly territorial and sometimes ram or attack people. The next intersection has a newer looking sign with “Mt. Not too far after the last intersection you hit the first boulder field. Limited snow left on the trail as of 9/20. Slept till 0530hrs then woke for breakfast and made the hike up to Mount Columbia on the 23rd of September. Four of the six headed off for the Columbia traverse. The trail's length and elevation gain of 4,500 feet keep the casual hiking crowds away. Harvard is often climbed in combination with Mount Columbia.
