Noughts and Crosses has been on my reading list for a long time, so when I got a book token I thought I'd get this short story and dip my toe into this world. At the time, the story-line was very dark and brutal at points which didn't sit well with me. As I say, it isn’t really a great book if you haven’t read anything in the series, but it does give you an indication of Blackman’s style and it is enough to keep your interest. But as a standalone it does work, pretty much.
It may be good for people who have read the rest of the series but, for someone who hasn't, it is frustrating. About the Author. With just 53 pages, overall, it just felt incomplete and pointless. A long time ago I read the first three books in the Noughts and Crosses series by Blackman, and really, really enjoyed them. It’s a short book, it was published as one of the UK’s World Book Day reads, so if you want to give it a go it won’t take you long to finish it. I've read other World Book Day books before and they can be a good way of getting into a new series but this was the opposite. I had to read a recap on the series to remember who the characters were. If you've not read N+C you'd have to read them before you read rhis. But they are both connected to each other too, and before the night is over, Eva will be forced to choose: betray Dan, or protect him - whatever the cost. Eva just wants to be left alone to mourn her daughter. Half of the book was just sneak peaks of other books. After that ending, I need Crossfire now! It's been several years since I read the Noughts and Crosses series, but as it was one of the first YA series I ever read, it holds a special place in my heart.
